The 1st Meeting with Cambodia of Project for Supporting Agricultural Survey on Promoting Sustainable Agriculture in ASEAN Region

On 1 September 2021, the Department of Planning and Statistics (DPS), Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), the Kingdom of Cambodia, together with AFSIS Secretariat had conducted the virtual meeting of the 1st meeting in Cambodia as a part of the Project for Supporting Agricultural Survey on Promoting Sustainable Agriculture in ASEAN Region (SAS-PSA) for the 3rd year project (2022). According to the Letter of Agreement (LoA) between AFSIS Secretariat and the DPS, MAFF of Cambodia, it was signed on 25 August 2021.

Field Survey in Lao PDR as A Part of SAS-PSA Project

The ASEAN Food Security Information System (AFSIS) Secretariat along with the Center for Agricultural Information (CAI), Agricultural Development Policy and Planning Division, Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE), Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Thailand, had conducted an In Country Wrap-up Meeting as a part of project for Supporting Agricultural Survey on Promoting Sustainable Agriculture in ASEAN region or SAS-PSA project in Thailand on 17 August 2021 via Zoom application due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.

Southwest Monsoon in the Philippines

From the 28th of July 2021 until the 1st of August 2021, the Southwest Monsoon has brought moderate to heavy and at times intense rains as well as isolated showers to multiple areas (Region 1, 3, 8, 9, MIMAROPA, CAR, and NCR) in the Philippines according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). Related incident reports included 236 floods (33 of which have already subsided and 26 are already receding) and 4 rain-induced landslides. The Southwest Monsoon has affected 179,341 families (613,503 persons) in 610 barangays (a small territorial and administrative district forming the most local level of government.) and displaced 40,783 persons (6,083 inside 137 evacuation centers, 34,700 outside evacuation centers) and 1 person has been reported missing.

Monsoonal Flooding in Myanmar

The prolonged heavy rainfall occurred in Myanmar across Rakhine, Bago, Ayeyarwady, Kayin, Mon, and Tanitharyi states with maximum rainfall per day around 50 millimetres during 21-26 July 2021. This prolonged heavy rain has caused flooding in Karen State, Mon State, and Tanintharyi Region since 22 July 2021. In addition, on 27 July 2021, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) of Myanmar reported that the low pressure area over the North Bay of Bengal still persists. Monsoon is vigorously strong over the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal. While, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) of Myanmar has released a flood warning for Salween and Thaung River in Kayin State (Hpa, Bilin, and Myawaddy) and Sittaung River in Bago (Madawk) as of 27 July 2021.

Inception Workshop in Lao PDR

On 6 July 2021, AFSIS Secretariat and Center for Agricultural Statistics (CAS), Department of Planning and Finance (DoPF), Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), Lao PDR had conducted the virtual Inception Workshop on Project for Supporting Agricultural Survey on Promoting Sustainable Agriculture (SAS-PSA) in Lao PDR. The main purposes of this Inception Workshop are to inform the objective and the future work plan of the SAS-PSA project, discuss the on-going implementations of the SAS-PSA in Lao PDR, and to get suggestions from all the stakeholders in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Lao PDR.

Virtual Trainings on SDG indicator 2.4.1

From 28 June to 1 July 2021, AFSIS Secretariat had participated in the Virtual Trainings on SDG indicator 2.4.1 “Proportion of Agricultural Area under Productive and Sustainable Agriculture” conducted by the Headquarter of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) via Zoom platform. The countries were grouped based on the regions (i.e. time zones) and there were representatives from the different 25 countries namely Australia, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Cook Islands, Fiji, India, Iran, Japan, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Nauru, New Zealand, Palau, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Samoa, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vanuatu that had been trained during the session of 28 June to 1 July 2021. Also, 5 representatives from AFSIS Secretariat had also participated with a commitment to the training for at least 4 hours each day.

The 19th Focal Point Meeting

The 19th Focal Point Meeting of ASEAN Food Security Information System (AFSIS) was virtually held on 22-23 June 2021 via Zoom platform due to the situation of COVID-19. It was organized by the AFSIS Secretariat and hosted by Department of International Cooperation and department of Planning and Statistics, Cambodia. The number of distinguished representatives from the relevant agencies including ASEAN Plus Three members, Remote Sensing Technology Center of Japan (RESTEC), and ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR) Secretariat had attended the meeting.
